This new record by dutch producer Bas Vermolen aka Arts The Beatdoctor continues the trend that was already hinted at in his recent remixes: the hypnotic loops and deep atmospheres from his trademark sound stayed, but on this release the lounge area was traded in favor of the main stage. Lazy Thunder is about intriguing compositions created around found sound loops, live instrumentation, combined with harsh and aggressive sounds. A record both for the headz and the open-minded dance crowds.
Lazy Thunder is a release in true Lowriders Recordings fashion; the music defies strict genre categorization. Rather, it’s a meeting point between Beats, Bass Music and Hip-Hop, but with an attention to composition not generally associated with any of those genres.
Remixes are provided by Sam A La Bamalot and Flako.
As before, the songs are compositions rather than beats. In every track you’ll find great sensibilities in the sound design that seem to intertwine with harsh and aggressive sounds, creating a theme for the whole EP.
This holds true from opener IL404, with its 8-bit arpeggios and whipping snaresound, to the distorted Hip-Hop grooves of Moebius’ Travels. The tempo goes down for Little Brother, a slow brooding track featuring the beautiful but somehow unnerving vocals of Ella (of Dutch indiepopgroup Houses fame), to pick up again for Ghost In The Machine, which features a similar brooding character, but takes it up a notch with a raw choppy bassline and headnod-inducing offbeat drums.
Remixes come courtesy of upcoming talent Sam a la Bamalot, whose version of Moebius’ Travels explores the harmonic possibilities of the main melody in the original, and Flako, who delivers a stunning remix of IL404 with his trademark sound and vocals.
