Maleza is a very personal take on bass music, Juke, Jamaican music, prepared pianos, old detuned synths, odd time signatures and huge live reverbs.
The idea of the record came when I was going through a lot of personal struggle and I was not able to get out of it. In the same period I decided to run in the woods near my home early in the morning. I ran every day, and ran and ran. Eventually I got out of my problems. So I left the ‘maleza’ away.
This is a very personal record, each sound has a deep meaning about me and my loved ones.
Maleza means ‘bad herbs, weeds, undergrowth’ in Spanish.
Maleza: First track is pretty much an LA hip-hop track with rave sounds at the end. A lot of bass and grooves in just 3 minutes.
Tell Me So: This track was recorded and mixed live at the Glue Kids studio. While I was playing some sounds and loops I was experimenting with. Glue Kids contributed with the bass, live delay and synths. And in a day session it was done. It’s kind of emotional Juke.
Alvaro: This track is in 11/4 time signature. I was experimenting on this signature with auto generative drum patterns and the piano notes came to my mind. There is this real piano with a midi robot in the studio Dan Deacon used for America. I sent the midi file there and recorded it. The end is a radical take on what synths can do nowadays.
You Need A Friend: We all need one I guess. The melody has an 80s feel to kind of Dabrye beat. The verse is kind of Jamaican.
Ana and I: This track came while playing long notes on my old Yamaha CS40 with a lot of reverb. The rhythm was sequenced live on top MPC style. It’s a track about relationships and has a deep meaning to me. The last synth is symbolises a storm with rain pouring down while you are running in the woods and it kind of renews me every time I hear it.
You Need A Friend (Cauto refrit): Cauto remix is a complete translation to the bass translation of the title track. Totally ace.
